The Meds, the Muscle, and the Missed Window.

Updated: 3 days ago

I’ve been coaching women for years. But lately, there’s something I can’t ignore—and I can’t stay quiet about it either.

Meet Annie: A Story of Many

Let me introduce you to Annie. She is in her late 60s. Annie is kind, sharp, and was always active in her earlier years. But now? She feels tired. Her muscles are weak. Some days, she struggles to get off the couch. Even a short walk leaves her winded.

Annie takes statins, diabetes medications, and something for her bones. She never started hormone therapy because she was told years ago it could cause breast cancer.

And Annie is not alone.

In fact, she represents millions of women over the age of 50 who have been slowly—and unintentionally—medicated into frailty.

The Medication Trap

Many women over 40 are often prescribed:

  • Statins (to lower cholesterol)

  • Type 2 diabetes medications (like metformin or newer injectables)

  • Sleep aids

  • Antidepressants

  • Blood pressure medications

But here’s the problem: These medications can have muscle-wasting side effects and may suppress natural energy, movement, and metabolism.

The Side Effects of Common Medications

Let’s break this down further:

  • Statins can cause muscle pain, weakness, and even long-term muscle loss.

  • Diabetes medications may lead to weight gain or reduce physical function over time.

  • Sleep aids and sedatives often disrupt natural circadian rhythms, resulting in more fatigue and less movement.

While each medication may serve a purpose, too often, they are prescribed without a plan to support the body naturally alongside them.

The Real Tragedy: The Hormone Therapy Fear

Back in 2002, the Women’s Health Initiative (WHI) released findings that suggested hormone replacement therapy (HRT) increased the risk of breast cancer, stroke, and heart disease.

The media amplified these findings—and almost overnight, millions of women were taken off HRT or never offered it at all.

Understanding HRT Better

What most women don’t know is that the WHI study involved older women (many well past menopause) using a specific type of synthetic hormone therapy.

Later analysis revealed that younger women—especially those within ten years of menopause—may actually benefit from HRT. The benefits can include:

  • Improved bone health

  • Cognitive protection

  • Better heart health

  • Effective weight management

  • Muscle retention

Yet, because of these outdated fears, many women still aren’t being told the full story.

What We Know Now

We’ve learned a lot since those early findings:

  • Muscle is medicine. Losing muscle affects metabolism, energy, balance, and longevity.

  • Movement matters. Strength training and walking aren't optional; they're essential.

  • Hormones impact everything. Estrogen supports muscle, metabolism, mood, and much more.

There’s a critical window—typically in your 40s to early 60s—where you can dramatically shift the course of your aging process.

The Path Forward: Taking Control

I see remarkable changes in women who prioritize movement, limit unnecessary medications, explore natural solutions, and, when appropriate, embrace HRT with the right provider and plan.

This isn’t about vanity. It’s about vitality.

Women deserve better. And we can’t wait for the system to catch up—we have to lead the change ourselves.
